No. The first movie followed the original series. The second movie continues right after the first movie, but follows a different path. I found a section in the booklet that came with my DVD copy of 2.22 that illustrates this perfectly.

The subtitle for the second installment of the Evangelion New Theatrical Edition is "Break."

Why "Break"? What exactly is "breaking"?

The subtitle for the three-part production as originally announced was "Prelude-Break-Quick." This is the name of a classical Japanese technique used in the performance of drama and martial arts. The fist part (2007), was an updated and retelling of the television series Evanglion New Theatrical Edition (1995) for a new era, featuring aggressive use of CG for an all-new visual expression.

The overall concept for the "New Theatrical Edition" can be compared to a railroad. In "Prelude," trains departing from the same start point will at first run in the same direction, but sooner or later they come across rail switch points and the familiar scenery starts to change. This is why the introduction part, which tries to start from the same departure point, is called a "Prelude."

Building on that base, Part 2 "Break" departs, with a few exceptions, from mere reproduction of past material to proceed towards a basically new creation. This includes the appearance of new characters and new Evanglions. The story also undergoes scenario modifications after scenario modification which, when combined with coplous redesigns of Angels and other elements, mark a complete update of the impression of Eva originally gave.

26 votes... Next week we're gonna do the voting a little differently this is seeming fixed.

Since I added a two sided dice to the forum to use as a coin we can do tie breakers a little better now.

Heads will always be the first option on the poll tails will always be the second tied option.

Metropolis = 1
Eva = 2

1 = Heads
2 = Tails

Neva! >:) Also again, the 1st movie was not good if you've not seen the TV series. That's why it made less sense and wasn't as good along with the fact it only covered the first half of the show which is the not so good part of the anime. Asuka made it so much better and then Shinji stopped being such a cry baby at one point. Plus it's been said by many people that the 2nd Eva movie is good from start to finish unlike the first one.

But if an anime has a not so good part, it can only be a decent anime anyway.
