The Film Club
THE FILM CLUB
Welcome to the Film Club! This is the club to join if you love watching non-anime films and want to be able to express your views with like minded individuals.
We will have ongoing discussions about films we have seen both new and old. We will also have activities where we will nominate and select a film to watch and then discuss our views on said film.
Club Rules:
If you wish to join send me a PM and I will ask make sure you get a club badge.
Film nominations must be released for home viewing (DVD/Blu-Ray/Digital) and available to stream online i.e. no films that are still showing in the cinema.
You cannot nominate a given film twice in a row.
As a member of this club you are required to watch the given film unless you have already seen it and can remember enough to take part in the discussions (probably best to just watch it again anyway).
It does not matter if you like the film we are watching or not, watch it anyway! We can then have a discussion on why you didn't like it and what we think about your opinion.
Have fun!

We are discussing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's Oni Press comic book of the same name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World follows the eponymous slacker rocker on his colorful quest to defeat his dream girl's seven evil ex-boyfriends. Twenty-two-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) may not have a job, but rocking the bass for his band, Sex Bob-omb, is a tough job unto itself. When Scott locks eyes with Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), he knows she's the girl he wants to grow old with. But Ramona has some serious baggage; her supercharged exes rue the thought of her being with another man, and they'll crush any guy who gives her a second glance. Now, in order to win Ramona's heart, Scott will do battle with everyone from vegan-powered rock gods to sinister skateboarders, never losing sight of his gorgeous goal as he pummels his way to victory.

Film Club Discussion - The Prestige
Let's discuss this film!
Here are some questions to think about:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
Was there something you did not understand in the film?
Would you improve anything about the film?
Were you satisfied with the ending?
What is your overall rating?
Feel free to to use or not use the questions.

Moses' reply:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
Well, I think I liked everything haha. At first I wasn't liking the non-linear story telling but it really picked up. It kept the secrets secretive until the very end without making the story a mess. Also, I don't know if it was intentional or whatever, but I was rooting for Borden the whole film. I actually thought it was the first time I was rooting for the bad guy, but then the ending happened. If you were meant to pull for Angier it was lost on me.
Would you improve anything about the film?
If I had to pick something, it would be the soundtrack. It just fit in without being very noticeable.
Were you satisfied with the ending?
Absolutely! Just when it seemed all too obvious that Borden was cloned by Tesla, out of left field comes an identical twin. The ending was bittersweet with Borden's clone living alone with their daughter. I thought it was well done.
What is your overall rating?
9/10
- Spoiler:
Karma's reply:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
Honestly, I liked pretty much every part of t. In the beginning, it was a little hard to understand the type of story it was being told, like if it actually had magic, and not tricks. Other than that, I liked it all. The antagonist was also hard to tell, but that doesnt really matter now. Twist ending just made the movie even more better.
Was there something you did not understand in the film?
Just the into as stated.
Would you improve anything about the film?
Probably make it a bit more clear when the movie starts.
Were you satisfied with the ending?
Simple:
Hell yeah
What is your overall rating?
I'd go with Moses and give it a 9/10
- Spoiler:
BK-201's reply:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
There was nothing I didn't like. I thought the story was great and had me guessing all the way to the end. Have to agree about the beginning being slightly confusing but it settles quickly. A great Chris Nolan film.
Would you improve anything about the film?
I wouldn't change anything although I agree with Moses that the soundtrack couls have been much better. You can see the progress Nolan has made since this film, especially considering the Inception soundtrack.
Were you satisfied with the ending?
Absolutely 100% YES!
What is your overall rating?
9/10
- Spoiler:
Dust-Worm's reply:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
I liked the use of magic throughout the film as I have a interest towards magic tricks and it was interesting to learn how they do some of them. The 2 protagonists were both unique and showed how ones man's obsession can over take his life.
Was there something you did not understand in the film?
At first towards the end I thought borden had escaped miraculously from being hung with a metal pipe in his throat (Which I recall from another movie which saved someone from suffocating) as I was lead to believe he was the one using true magic as well as the other guy. I guess the movie lead me to believe it was a, fantasy movie? until the end
Would you improve anything about the film?
Nothing I could think of.
Were you satisfied with the ending?
Yes! Was a shocking twist in the end when they had revealed they were brothers working on the magic trick and filled in so many questions
What is your overall rating?
9/10 one of the best movies I have seen in a while
- Spoiler:
sayWut's reply:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
I loved the magic tricks as well as the science part in ways , the big machines and the way they were built was really interesting and unique! I like how it all changed , how things began to escalate from simple magic tricks to ground breaking tricks!
Was there something you did not understand in the film?
I don't think actually Im surprised I more or less understood it all.. although I did watch it twice
Would you improve anything about the film?
I honestly cant think of anything ...
Were you satisfied with the ending?
Yea was damn good! nothing I would changed at all
What is your overall rating?
9 / 10 good acting, as well as having awesome actors!
- Spoiler:
The7thSeal's reply:
What did you like and/or dislike about the film? Why?
I loved how well they captured the rivalry between the main characters. Though I could explain the majority of the story with the line, 'The tale of two men trying to screw each other over (That's not a gripe, just something that came to mind while watching it). Also, I really liked how the story was set out, beginning at the end of the story, and then showing the events that led up to that point. Another thing, the film had me trying to figure out the tricks all the way through. The one problem I had, was Bale's Cockney accent. I just found it really annoying, though it wasn't that bad, it felt forced at some points.
Was there something you didn't understand?
The Tesla Cloning Machine. How exactly did that work? I was just extremely improbable, and detracted a bit from the story.
Were you satisfied with the ending?
Extremely. It had the 'Big Reveal' ending, while at the same time, leaving a slight cliffhanger.
What is your overall rating?
9/10

Re: The Film Club
I don't even remember there being a voting thread for what we were watching :/
Anyway, I'll watch it later. Also, I think it would be smarter if you made a discussion thread for it so it doesn't get bogged down by all the other posts
Until the movie is done downloading, here's my watchlist:
-Red Dawn
-Oliver and Company
-Prince of Egypt
I have a few other movies still on my HDD, but those 3 are what I plan on watching today. Here's what I got on my HDD that I don't plan on watching today:
-Casino
-The Exorcist
-The Omen
-The Human Centipede
-Silent Hill
-War of the Worlds
-The Benchwarmers
-Looper
-Full Metal Jacket

I intend to make a seperate discussion thread for each film we watch. I just wasn't sure if I could just make one without permission and there weren't many posts on the last film that I just put them here.

Re: The Film Club
I'll probably watch Warrior tonight.
BK, may I make a club rule suggestion? I suggest that whatever movie we watch, it will not be a sequel unless we plan on watching the movies in a sequence. If we were to watch sequels, some people who decided not to watch the prequel will not get the story (if there is one).

I'm not so sure that's a good idea. Some movies can be viewed standalone even if they are a sequel. In that case we could be adding a lot of needless hours to the assignment.

I'm gonna have to agree with siets on this. However we can do this when there is a film which really needs the prequel to be seen first to understand what's going on.

You can set this up, if you want, although it will be difficult considering the timezone differences but it sounds like it would fun.

Hi all, sorry for not starting the new club activity. I've been very ill and still am (got a chest infection) and so haven't had the energy to do anything.
Anyway, feel free to PM me your nominations for the next film. Remember this month the genre of film you can nominate is limited to "Romance". The first 8 nominations I receive will put up for vote this Saturday or Sunday.
