Citing the success of its Nintendo Direct events, and a desire to focus its presentations for different sections of the market, boss Satoru Iwata has said at today's investor Q&A that instead of staging a single major press conference intended for everyone, the company will instead hold a number of smaller events at E3, such as one for distributors and one for Western press, which will be behind closed doors.

Well its not like they're doing new hardware for once. Although both the 3DS and the Wii U need a good shove, that should come from the software devs.

The 3DS is actually in pretty strong standing right now. It's the Wii U that is in dire need of a spotlight. Nintendo is really dropping the ball on this one. No one is buying the Wii U so they scrambled to throw together a bunch of Nintendo Direct announcements and now they have no aces in the hole to showcase for E3. If this is all they have to offer for the system then I think they launched it prematurely and should have considered holding off until they have a worthwhile exclusive, because spending $350 just for a New Super Mario Bros isn't going to cut it.

The 3DS is still killing it's main competitor (PS Vita) in sales per month (even though I haven't touched my 3DS since getting a Vita, but I digress).

But other than that... The Wii U thus far has dug itself quite a hole, tanking in sales and losing support from devs.
Nintendo might be going down that dark path Sony went down a while back when they were basically bleeding money trying to recover from the terrible PS3 launch.

Probably because Sony will be unveiling the PS4 and there are rumours of Microsoft announcing the next Xbox.

Nintendo have done a pretty good job on their own through their Nintendo Direct streams.
