Boston Marathon Explosion
Has anyone been watching the news about this at all today? I have read a bit about this being a terrorist attack and bombs being hidden in trash cans and such.
I saw a harlem sake meme video with the explosions in it and I thought that was highly inappropriate.

i was really shocked when i opened my cell phone/mobile tv to watch a documentary. that was just ..... shocking.
about the inappropriate jokes, yeah im with the "it annoys me" team. lets say, people were hurt and died to that. a little respect to them is not that difficult to do.

Re: Boston Marathon Explosion
I don't really have a problem with humor directed at tragedies. It's just another way that some people cope (or just try to have fun in an otherwise crappy situation), and isn't necessarily trying to add insult to injury for the victims. That being said, cracking jokes to the wrong person is still obviously a bad idea; know your audience and be mindful of people's sensitivities.
I just personally can have a morbid sense of humor. My father is a funeral home mortician; it comes with the territory.

Had a blast.
All bad jokes and puns aside, I shall treat this the same way I treat every other bombing incidents.
By feeling sorry for America and at the same time, laugh at every joke that's aimed towards it.
Call me an asshole, but that's just how I react.

Re: Boston Marathon Explosion
This information is subject to extreme skepticism, confirmed and clear details won't be available for some time...
- Spoiler:
- The causality count isn't final at this point but there are about 3 dead and over 125 wounded, 15 wounded critically.
From official reports there was no known creditable threat that correlated to this incident. At least two bombs exploded, about 5 more suspicious devices were found. Roughly 200 national guardsmen were already there for the marathon security. There is a massive federal, state, and local investigation underway into the incident. Despite reports of persons being held for questioning and one at a hospital being held in custody as a person of interest, there is no confirmation of this information at this time. Across the world increased and tightened security measures are being taken at all sensitive locations.
The FBI, CIA, and NCC is reportedly treating this as a terrorism investigation.
The police are reportedly searching for a hooded man who left the area in a van prior to the explosion. Also reportedly there has been a raid on an apartment by the FBI, ATF, ICE, Boston PD, Revere PD as well as MSP detectives and Bomb Techs.

Re: Boston Marathon Explosion
I don't know why this became a discussion of offensive jokes, but whatever. I personally think you tempt fate when poking fun at someone's misfortune. If my family was left crippled by an accident, I wouldn't want people making jokes about it, so I won't make jokes when someone else suffers anything that serious.
Of course the thing with irreverent humour is that there is no line. My idea of "going too far" will differ from others, so I can't fault people for making what I consider inappropriate jokes. Though that being said, I still think the people who joke about this stuff are being assholes.
In regards to the Boston Marathon Explosion, I hope the injured get better and my sympathies go out to those who have lost a family member.

Not really sure why joking about bombings is even okay to do in general... but my condolences to those families who had people that were injured and unfortunately for those that met their deaths that day.

Re: Boston Marathon Explosion
When I watched the news they kept calling it an act of terrorism, and I know that is the term we use to define tragedies like these, but a lot of people take that to mean extremist groups like al quida (pardon my spelling) are automatically at fault. I am saddened by what happened, and immediately worried about ignorant people who will suspect Muslims, or apparently North Korea right away. Terrorism is not connected to any one set of individuals, and some people seem to forget, or are just unknowing of the fact that any violent act involving explosive, or fire arms is an act of terrorism. My heart and prayers go out to the victims of this attack, and their families. It is sad that we live in a world where people are capable of such violence and hate, and I have no doubt that politicians will use this to fuel support for various laws they want to pass. I hope that people can respect the impact that this event has had.
The jokes that people post cant be helped, some use them to cope, others are just insensitive to situations like these. I find them distasteful, just like 911 jokes, but I don't have the right to tell them what they can and cannot say, nor the means to stop them if I even felt like it wouldn't be wrong to do so.

Re: Boston Marathon Explosion
The inappropriate jokes aside... the topic in the hall of the elders that was closed and referred here... so continuing...
It was more than a little surreal and unsettling, perhaps creepy, how for the first time I am aware of in American history in response to a terrorist bombing they 1) locked down the entire Boston area including checkpoints around the area, 2) had police and national guard fully mobilized in full combat gear, 3) were exercising the authority within a state of emergency in the public interest to search door-to-door without warrant, 4) were displacing civilians from their residences and stopping cars on the road... all for one suspected and injured teenager.
In a previous topic a long time ago on the issue of warrants, I think it was on the old just dubs, I discussed that there is an established precedence with the courts that allow for this kind of emergency response due to public safety. But again I don't think something of this scale has ever been done before and there are those who are arguing that the Obama administration might of gone beyond what the previous precedence allowed on the matter allows.
The somewhat modified quote from Benjamin Franklin comes to mind, "Those who sacrifice liberty for security, deserve neither and will lose both."
Also while this lock down of the Boston area was described as voluntary... with the amount of police and national guard out... and that they were stopping people and cars sending them back to their residences... I'm not entirely sure if that constitutes voluntary.
There are a lot of unanswered questions leading up to this event too.
For example, its reported for the time being that the teenager was somehow suspected to be injured (he was) was fleeing from the police chasing him in a stolen vehicle, he then at one point got out and continued to run away... and somehow the police chasing him LOST him... how does an injured teenager on foot lose the police?

The FBI, CIA, and NCC the day of the bombing made it known that they were treating the bombing as a terrorism investigation. President Obama the day after the Boston bombing called the attack an act of terrorism. If you don't believe me... why not believe Fox 'news' broadcasting President Obama's speech?plantkingman wrote:That useless president of ours isn't calling it a terrorist attack.
