Your favourite multiplayer game.
As this title would suggest, I'm curious what everyone's favourite multiplayer game is. It doesn't need to be a multiplayer focused game, nor does it have to be over an online connection.
It was a tough choice for me, but I think Battlefield: Bad Company 2 comes out on top. Defending a rush objective in that game is one of my favourite things ever. It begins with the quiet, as you lay down your explosive mines and your teammates assume their positions. Then, the quiet is quickly transformed into the sounds of sniper rifles going off in the distance and tanks slowing marching towards the objective. Soon enough all sound is drowned out by explosions, and the ringing noise of the rush objectives being activated. You're pushed further and further back, until you're on your last two rush objectives. You see the enemy in the horizon, hastily approaching. You've lost the battle 3 times already, and now is your last chance to buckle down and win the war. There's no time to hesitate. This time you're giving it your all, in one final attempt to send those bastards back to their bases. I loved that transition between the calm before the storm, and the storm itself.
Honorable mentions go to the split-screen modes in War of the Monsters and Star Wars: Battlefront.

Re: Your favourite multiplayer game.
Super Smash Bros. Melee - i simply can't describe...
Honorable mentions: (I have way too many)
Happy Wars - Free to play xbla game. Only downside is when you star coming across people who have bought premiums and can destroy you in 1 hit.
Halo CE - more or less a personal experience when we had the whole computer lab playing games
Starcraft - same as Halo
CoD Black ops - Still more or less my favorite CoD because most of the time, spawn spots were not an issue.
MAG - 256 player games. Need I say more?
Assassins Creed Brotherhood - Although later versions have improved matchmaking and game types, this was just amazingly fun to me.
Mario Kart (any) - because when we play, we are no longer friends.
Gears of War 3 (Beast/horde modes)
Guitar hero - Playing music with friends is fun
Mass effect 3 - Great unless you just dont get anything from packs...
Minecraft - Making shit with friends is fun.
Borderlands (both) - 4 player co-op shooter with RPG features. Sweet.

Goldeneye for the N64. Playing with mines was so stupidly fun. "Come at me bro!" "I can't you put mines" "Then shoot them" "OK" :puts more mines :
