What is your difficulty level?

Easy
Medium
Hard
Troll hard (This is when the AI is basically cheating. Most likely found in strategy games but I know some games come with a unlockable difficulty level.)

This of course applies to the single player aspect of games and relies on the AI.

These usually are the difficulty levels of video games (of course they have their own flavor text). What skill level do you play at? I usually play on the hardest setting unless it's meant to be impossibly hard in which case I drop it one notch.

I always start my first run on default/normal/medium. Unless i know the game series/type REALLY well.

I feel that this was the way the developers thought it should be, so thats how i do it for my first time through.

Easy/Medium. I play games for fun, and I don't have time to do the same level 50+ times over

It varies depending on my knowledge of the game. For the longest time I stuck to the easiest difficulty setting because I grew up during the NES era where every difficulty was impossible difficulty. Now that games have scaled back appropriately in recent years, I tend toward medium/normal difficulty or if I know the series very well and I enjoy the gameplay a lot I might crank it up even higher right on my first playthrough. More often than not though I find most games these days to be full of boring padding segments to inflate the gameplay length so I just play on normal most of the time to speed up my playthrough.

I like the medium difficulty in my story rpg games. Or easy if the dying sprees get too crazy.

In shooters have to complete them on HARDCORE/INSANE! For online practice purposes.

I usually run through games or the normal difficulty first time around. Although, If I can b asked, I will play through on progressively harder difficulties, wherein I either grind my way to victory, or stop and never look at the game again.

I start with Hard. if its too difficult and I'm getting frustrated I'll go back to medium. But I typically prefer hard because I want a challenge out of games.

Easy. On any other level i get raped hard.

Like someone said above, I don't really have the time nowadays to play a game on Hard difficulty. I usually stick to Normal. I do play the odd game on Hard if I know the series well enough.

Medium almost ,hard can't play

I generally put the difficulty as high as I can handle without dying all the time. For example if it is an RPG I tend to put it at whatever setting I can be at and won't constantly die against random enemies. Otherwise fighting those stupid things either gets repetitive and annoying or insanely hard and unbeatable. The thing is not all games have the same concept of what is easy and hard so this can very a bit but generally I try starting on hard and see how that works for me and then I scale it down if hard mode just proves to be too much that time. In The World ends with you harder modes were only unlocked later in the game but they did give you the ability to drag your level down to increase drop rates and I normally had my level dragged all the way down to one unless there was a really hard boss.

I always play most games on the second hardest the first time around, then I play it on the hardest afterwards....

The trick is to play cautiously

I play hard for all my games unless I've never played them before period.

Yeah or in the case of RPG games a little early grinding helps a lot. Just kill everything you can early on and by the time you get tired of grinding you probably have more than enough strength to handle yourself for a while. When I played Tales of the abyss I played it on the hardest difficulty avaliable (a really hard mode is only unlocked after one playthrough) and with just a little extra grinding here and there (not a lot just sticking around a few areas to fight a dozen or two extra monsters) was all I really needed. It was still challanging at times (bosses that used this one attack called Negative gate were nearly impossible to beat without some extra grinding) but that is why I played on hard mode. So that I could have an extra bit of challange.

I play on the Heroic difficulty

for heavy story based games easy, all the time, i want a story, not something hard, i can relax and read a book, if you will

medium for basicly everything else,

and hard for shooters

Normal/Troll Hard when playing alone.
Easy/Hard(most often) when bored.
Easy/Normal when starting off in a (sub)genre or new series of games.
Normal/Hard when playing with friends locally.
Normal/Hard when I'm feeling impatient or thirsty.
Easy when consuming large amounts of soda.
Troll Hard when I'm in pain.
And Easy/Troll Hard when I'm mostly zoned out.

Depends, if there is a trophy/achievement or a really cool unlockable item involved for playing at a higher difficulty then i'll play at hard or above. If not then i'll play on the casual/normal difficulty so i can enjoy the story of the game.

Usually play on hard on most single player games, insane/veteran whatever you want to call the hardest difficulty for fps.
