72 Pages
Is the max amount of pages allowed in one thread. One of the little annoyances of this forum host. It's been suggested many time to their support forum to have it fixed. But shortly after a thread hits 72 pages the topic will auto split itself into a new thread. Just a heads up since some of the asylum topics are getting close.

So that's what happened to the Counting to 50 thread. I was wondering about that.

Good to know. I'm sure those counting threads will get there fairly quick.

It seems more like a bug on their part they just haven't addressed. It's not a huge deal though, we're only here temporarily.

Bleh.
If the site knows to make a new thread when it hits 72, it's probably a feature rather than a bug. probably some sort of server-side application to keep their entire site running faster. the sooner it can put old threads into the ground, the less active memory needed on their part.

That doesn't imply its a feature though considering there was focus brought to eventually identifying the problem. Bugs can also preform undesired outcomes like that, all it's doing is splitting the last post. These threads end up piling up anyways since there's no timer for pruning.
Edit: Hell, it could be a feature and it was being addressed improperly. Just doesn't make sense considering its the same amount of data regardless of how the thread is split up. If its popular enough to run for 72 pages you're likely going to want to keep the original around after they split.

Whether or not there's a timer for pruning only effects how much data is on the servers, while the active memory has to take and render the entire thread a new post is added to, so it's a sacrifice of slightly more stored data in return for less active data usage.
Now I'll admit it may well be a bug, however, even if it's a bug, they wouldn't fix it anyway, too much work for such a minimal change, not to mention that fixing it may even be detrimental, however, this is all of no consequence, because, as you said,

You're talking about such a minimal amount of memory though. It just doesn't seem practical enough for this bug/feature to be intentional.

Bleh.
Is it minimal? How many forums does this place host?
It may be minimal to our forum, however, in the grand scheme, it may turn out to be so much more.

Not sure. But considering how highly rated they are in surveys and consumer reports it's only normal to assume they have enough servers to host forums which facilitate those type of demands.

That's true, but then again, most companies want to turn as much of a profit as they can, if we assume it's a feature, then it may be so they can optimize their servers and run something else alongside the forum hosting service, what, I dunno, probably some adsense revenue farm or something.

I'm just proposing ideas it's probably just a glitch anyway.
Best stop wondering about it anyway, if there really is something somewhat shady like an adsense farm, I dun think they'd be happy about us thinking about it. so, I say we leave well enough alone.

Yeah, I'll go with bug, an intentional feature wouldn't cut it to a number like 990 posts.

That is what I thought happened. Getting close huh. It already happened to the asylum. We are already on our 3rd count to 50 thread because of this.

Aside from the character limits in messages and sigs regular forum members gain no benefit from knowing this stuff.
