Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
Episode 1
- Spoiler:
- The first episode wasn't mindbreakingly awesome, but it was still good and showed a lot of promise for the future from my perspective. There's a lot for them to work with. How will the "Wired" aspect fit in to the story, especially since it seemed like a large part of when the Valvrave became operational? How much does Haruto actually lose for sacrificing his humanity? How will the ideological clash of "winning" play out, and how will Haruto's thoughts towards it change? What is the Geass-like power, and what is the history behind it? The foundation for a thought-out, interlinking story is there.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem like this protagonist is as complex as Lelouch in both character and past. He's a bit wimpy, but I highly doubt he will remain like that as the series goes on. He's already showing signs of change or at least the possibility to do so.
The episode itself was nice. Even with such small time, Shouko got a bit of a diverse (though slightly generic) personality portrayed to make her seem more human and relatable before her death. But I don't think they focused enough on the feelings and loss Haruto had. They could've had sadder music or quick flashbacks to usual benchmarks of life or something. Well, they were low on time I guess, but the loss didn't seem so substantial. But based on how Shouko is portrayed in the opening alongside other characters instead of as an ideal or memory, I think she may return somehow. The music overall was good but barely not great in my ears. The animation was satisfactory, though understanding what was happening during the CG robot fight was hard; it may just be because it was night.
EDIT: Also, boobs.

Not really into these kind of animes with mech's but Suisei no Gatirgana is good so far, any thoughts on this one?

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
Hmm...
- Spoiler:
- I liked that they aren't afraid of killing people, but... why this girl??? Usually MC girls are annoying, but this one was perfect in my eyes I know they used her death as a trigger for MC to do what he did, but still... And she didn't even get a proper farewell moment... her death scene felt really rushed. Everyone started to shout at him that he should get over it... wait how can you get over it after a minute when your love dies????
Enough badmouthing Tbh, I enjoyed the episode. Antagonists seemed really interesting and promising. MC is a bit wimpy, but it's understandable. I guess they will use that black haired girl as a new lover, I don't have anything against that, she seemed attractive and not really annoying (hopefully). But the main I loved it was a darker theme mecha genre. Since I saw who wrote this story, I have high hopes for it. They better not disappoint me.
P.S. I hope you are right with Shouko coming back... but they better make it logical.

I just watched Gargantia, and I can say the two anime aren't too similar. Gargantia is more sci-fi than mecha focused, and Valvrave is more focused on the characters and mecha.

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
So it was greenlit for a second season already? Or I guess it was always intended.

It was probably intended from the beginning. Since it's a mecha from Sunrise in their spring slot, they probably wanted to invest a lot into it, including 2 seasons. But I think they didn't initially announce it to be 2 seasons since they couldn't make the second half in time for summer, so they took a bit of time to reach a decision, which was to split the anime into two parts like how Fate/Zero was split.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking since the MAL article was already there before any sort of news about a second season.

- If you get blown away by a bomb or explosion, you obviously wont have time for a farewell moment. And they were shouting at him to get over it because they wanted him to come along to a safe place. They couldnt have known he would own the enemy's asses.

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
Episode 2:
- Spoiler:
- It's... hard for me to take this seriously now. There are just a lot of things that go unexplained or seem to rely too much on rule of cool. For example, how can some random guy like Haruto pilot a complex thing like a humanoid robot? At one point he's having trouble, but then the next moment he's kicking ass like some Kira Yamato. Why did Saki (black-haired girl) jump to the cockpit? Because she likes Haruto? Why does she like Haruto? That interest would've came out of nowhere.
I don't mind too much that Shouko came back from the dead. I didn't really think they would kill her off so easily. At least they get it out of the system now instead of having her come back much later in the series. I can see what they were going for when Haruto believes he shouldn't be with Shouko. But I think saying "monsters can't feel" while he looks completely human and is obviously feeling feelings is pretty dumb. If he said something like he doesn't deserve her because he killed or because he will turn into a monster or it will end badly or something, then that'd be more believable.
This isn't an unpleasant series or a bad series, but I just can't take it seriously, and as long as that happens then any attempts to climb back to seriousness with dramatic moments and such will fall short for me. There are shows that I don't take seriously but still really like, but the problem is that those shows don't try to be serious, and I don't take Valvrave seriously while it may try to be serious. Hopefully the show will improve or will try not to be serious.

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
- Spoiler:
- After reading what Kusa said, I don't really have anything else to add. I also didn't like that Saki apparently loves him; Haruto calls himself a monster and cries; just simply lots of unreasonable moments...
Oh and I wish he would have stayed in L-Elf body... he looked good this way.

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
This episode had several wtf? moments, a whole lot of things left unexplained, and a lot of things that just felt like they were thrown in there for no reason.
- Spoiler:
- I can't say that I don't like Shoko pratically coming back from the dead, in fact I had wanted them to get together right from the beginning, but it feels like the whole reason behind Haruto's piloting was completely ruined.
Another thing that kinda made me mad was that he didn't follow through with his confession. He practically went insane for her!

I'm almost 100% sure that his "in-human" traits come from pressing that "do you give up your humanity?" button. At first I didn't really see the point of that, but now it's like the mecha was asking for permission to alter his DNA to give him those abilities.

It does not need to be deleted, it was the best part of the whole episode.Ovyda wrote:Bato wrote:

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
My friend has opened my eyes to a new perspective of this show. He has revealed to me how hilarious the show is if you just go with the flow and don't take it seriously. For examples:
- Space Nazis
- A-Drei (the guy who gets shot in the eye) is Code Geass' Orange 2.0
- L-Elf is a hilarious name, especially when Orange 2.0 screams it angrily (see here)

Re: Valvrave the Liberator Discussion
You have to give credits for the 3rd episode.
- Spoiler:
- In my opinion it was really well done. Of course a-one-man-army thing looked a bit unbelievable, but it's anime, so I don't mind.
My favourite character is definitely L-Elf. He's like Lelouch from CG to me (I mean a genius/prodigy). The last words really got me into thoughts... what did he mean? I believe he really mean it. He will join up with Haruto and try to defeat Dorssia. Sounds like something Lelouch would do lol (going against his kind).

I just love how he posted a comment and he suddenly has 700 million friends (Including the president), makes it on the news, and is invited by professional athletes to come to their games.
- Spoiler:
- It also seems that he can't control that berserk-mode. I thought that only would happen if he dies.
