Marvel at How Japanese Anime Has Changed and Evolved
An interesting read about the evolution of Anime over the years.
Call me dumb but this is the first Im hearing that Astro Boy was an anime.
While Japanese anime first appeared as early as 1917, it began to flourish in the 1960s with the spread of television throughout Japan. And over the years, its styles have changed.
This isn't new, and it's something Kotaku has touched on previously (here). However, below you can see images from 2ch that catalogue anime styles from the 1960s to this decade. They do an exhaustive job of illustrating the trends and evolutions in Japanese anime.
. . . The rest of the story

What K-On would look like through the decades!

I like the 70s look, they had fuller lips than just lines.

I like 80s Mio the most of the Mios.
ALSO WOW, HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW ASTRO BOY WAS AN ANIME. IT WAS MADE BY TEZUKA, THE GRANDFATHER (some go as far of god) OF ALL ANIME.
Sorry but really that's something that I thought everybody knew.

Re: Marvel at How Japanese Anime Has Changed and Evolved
I love the subtle joke about 90s anime in the last picture.
I do find modern anime art a little too "soft" in general.
- Spoiler:
- For the uninitiated, most of the anime introduced to west in the 90s was ugly, low budget acquisitions. So while the animation didn't take the nosedive the picture indicates, most of the anime that came over before the 90s was the moderately to exceptionally good with fewer budget titles. so at the time it would have seemed like animation had taken a nosedive in quality.

The 70s lips look isn't bad, but most of the time I prefer lips aren't accentuated too much. A lot of the time I find that when characters pretty up with lipstick and such, I dislike it.

anyone else notice how shading and the color gray played a role in the 80's style? Many faces are often added some touch of gray for shading in some way.
