I'm getting the new one when it comes out in February. My favorite in the series is path of radiance, though radiant dawn is great too. I hope the handhelds one day are as good as those.....
If you don't know what I'm talking about, maybe look at Serenes Forest...

I've always been interested in the gameplay, but the story never interested me much.

Funny, I remember making a 'looking for' thread about Path of Radiance back on the old-old forums and you pointed me towards those same forums. They still look very much the same.

I've played PoR and Radiant Dawn since. Very much enjoyed those. Haven't gone around to the rest of the series, but will be picking up Awakening when it comes around.

I've played most of the English Fire Emblem games. I haven't played Shadow Dragon or its sequel, and I was almost done with Sword of Seals until I took a break and never went back to it. I'm developing a bad, OCD habit of manipulating my characters' stats to try to optimize them. I'll end missions at like 90 EXP on as many characters as possible, then at the start of missions I'll plan out movements or abuse saves or something to level them immediately and simply restart the mission if the stats aren't what I wanted. EXP distribution before missions also made this simple, especially in PoR when I replayed it. Damn Radiant Dawn turned me into this! The save states in that game were too tempting to not abuse, and I maxed out all of my characters stats, even Prince Kurthnaga (who, by the way, becomes badass if you're willing to give him like every kill he can get).

The next best one IMO is probably the one with Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector since most of the characters (except Eliwood) are badass. Sacred Stones with Ephraim is pretty cool too, but he gets a horse and then his stats suck hard afterwards.

Oh, the ones on GBA? Yeah, I should get around to those before Awakening. Cheers!

That's the most advanced form of save abuse I've ever heard and this series is full of them. I can't let anyone die (until the final chapter at least) and I want to collect everyone but I don't do stat manipulation. I also don't like arenas in the GBAs. Shadow Dragon is good, it's longer than I expected though, so it's not that accessible (because I tend to drop it and forget it if anything comes up).
I love how this topic is now full of mods lol.

Yeah, I used to play the game pretty normally and simply just restarted the entire mission if any people die, but my attachment to my characters got to the point that I wanted to be a perfectionist and make them all awesome :/. Now I get regretful and think about the lost potential when I play normally and get bad stats; I'll probably just try to deal with that with Awakening. I never liked abusing the arenas. I used them a bit when I came across them, but I didn't camp them and cycle too often. I'm not too interested in Shadow Dragon, but I heard good things about its sequel (which has a completed fan translation).

It's strange because the first Fire Emblem game I played was Radiant Dawn. Then I went back and played games six through 11 (using a ROM for six).

I really enjoy the games, although the plot is hit or miss. I thought early games were a little too minimalist (linear progression towards a obviously evil endgame boss) and Radiant Dawn did the opposite and was too encompassing and unfocused.

Yeah, I think the plot really influenced how motivated I was to play. With the earlier ones like Sword of Seals, it was difficult to get into the plot (since there basically wasn't any), so I got bored early on and didn't play it through for a while. But Path of Radiance was a lot easier to play though. I think the problem with Radiant Dawn was that they tried to incorporate a new story in, while it also tried to appeal as a sequel to the popular PoR with including most of the characters.

Yes. There were too many characters in Radiant Dawn, especially near the end when every unplayable character you've ever met becomes playable for no reason. Also, the Fire Emblem and the Goddesses hijacked the third act.

What are you guys' favorite type(s) of unit to use? I would say mercenaries/heroes since they're good at everything... but that's probably why they didn't continue into the console FEs. Outside of that, I like to have a fast and efficient playstyle with taking the initiative and wiping out most of my enemies before they can counterattack. That usually leads me to using cavalry a lot, but I don't like how they have low stat caps.

But even with that trend, I just use a good mix of all the classes, except for knights because they're too damn slow (minus Gatrie since he's badass).

Yeah Mercs/Heroes are OP. I prefer the opposite to your approach, I send the Knights and Gens in first and laugh as the enemy leave barely a scratch on them and then they are engulfed by the rest of my army as my lure moves forward. Cavs are pretty good especially if I need to escort somebody to recruit someone.

It's really a matter of the situation, since I try to deploy a different strategy depending on the map, as I'm sure everyone does.

Given that, I'm a fan of units with traits that make that better for specific maps. Thieves for navigating those intricate indoor maps. Flying units for terrain-heavy maps. Etc...

This is true. Even for those who love cavs or knights, there are some maps they just don't work on. Cavs suck on bridge combat, and Knights are absolutely awful in desert maps. I can't agree on thieves and flying units aren't cool because what they have in manueverability and specific usefulness, they suffer in general usefulness. I never level my thief, he's a can opener that gets deployed after I've cleared the area of danger. And I'm always too afraid of bowmen and wind mages for pegasi.
Though I must admit I loved wyverns.

I found that while Pegasus Knights die easily, they can be used really well in general fights for clean-up, finishing kills, and rescuing people. Being the last people to enter a fight usually keeps them safe from their weaknesses. Thieves are close to useless though in my opinion. I've only used one thief consistently, and that was Volke.

I wonder how this will work. SMT and FE have completely different universes in terms of location, time period, and general mood.

They pulled it off with Pokemon Conquest, another unexpected cross-over. I'm interested in how this will work out too.

Well I can see it with Pokemon, because presumably in that world Pokemon were always there on some level regardless of the level of human development.

Not sure how to put together Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei what with the magic-tech in the latter.

I've played almost all fire emblems and enjoyed it's difficulty. Made me respect that holy RNG god that made my enemy's critical me at the most worst times lol.

No sarcasm though I really liked all the games my favorite being the older Fire Emblem 4. Man those maps were huge! Takes a whole day to clear one level which always changes the further you progress.
